Tips on Gay Travel: Hawaii -- The BIG Island

More about the Big Island

Kalani Resort

Kalani

If the Kalani Resort workshops (on the Puna Coast of the Big Island, Hawaii -- mentioned in an earlier blog post "Travelling Alone") don't fit your schedule, Kalani itself still is a great place to stay on the Big Island -- good food -- all organic buffet, the pool/sauna/jacuzzi are clothing optional. Locals have monthly passes and often there are
hunky guys on the staff who hang out there besides the guests.

Kalani is close enough to walk to Kehena Black Sands Beach, the semi-isolated nude beach back at mile marker 19
(Hwy 37) for whale watching (best time for humpbacks is Dec - March), dolphins swims, and nude people - many are gay but this beach is visited by all kinds of people and there are  mixed crowds on the weekends.

You can no longer camp out at Kalani, but there is a Hawaii County campsite a few miles away (  )or stay in various types of rooms at Kalani. While it is not a nudist resort, the pool / hot tubs and sauna area is clothing-optional from 3:00pm every day. So it's almost like being a nude resort.

There are also some gay B&Bs not far away too, such as Absolute Paradise among others.

Steam Vent Inn is a decent B&B too -- right next to the natural steam saunas (guys cruise there too). But don't forget about the Kona side of Hawaii Island, and the north and east, Wapio Valley is a great hike -- like to splash-flash (skinny dip there) and possibly camp at Laupahoehoe Scenic Point (park is at shore off main highway) and make it two islands and see gay Oahu too.

See more info about the Puna, including the Steam vents and other sights (use pull down GO menu) at:

Be sure to see the lava and lava tube caves at Volcanoes National Park (South West of Hilo).

Kona Side

I also recommend the night dive (or you can snorkel too) with giant mantas at Kona. It is a fantastic experience and then, you can spend some time at the local nude / gay beach at Kailua-Kona: Honokohau Beach or at Beach 67, not far from Waialea Beach Park on the Old Puako Road.  It's called Beach 67 because it's down a rough road which begins at telephone pole No. 67.  It's a clothing optional beach.

Directions to Honokohau Beach: Hwy 19 towards the Kona airport, look for the Honokohau Boat Harbor sign, take left then first right. It is part of a national park -- so rangers do patrol at times; park along the road
Head down the North trail, far end of the beach (about 300-700 ft).
