Freeballing as Fashion, Lifestyle and Fetish

Getting Freeballing and Flashing Confused?

Something that is super cool for me is freeballing AND some peekboo flashing at the same time. One thing about thie Freeballing.com site/group is that I don't think we are ever going to resolve the controversy/confusion about what is just plain freeballing and what is flashing/exposing/exhibitionism.. but it's not really necessary to make that divide clear.. we should be celebrating what makes us more alike than different. There is something very hot about guys in boards shorts, especially those without shirts and who are clearly freeballing. When they are confident, proud of their bodies -- not afraid to show of their assets -- they are at the most masculine. I don't think you'd need to be gay to find such guys attractive -- at least you'd want to hang out with cool guys like that.
Freeballing as Fetish
Is freeballing for me a type of more or less 'innocent' flashing -- like the way a woman might show cleavage or wear a mini-skirt and high heels?
I have my own way to freeball and enjoy a bit of peekaboo flashing. My cargo pants and a pair of shorts have a short belt with clip buckle across the front that can be adjusted so I can control how much they sag without falling off. So if I'm in a flashing mode or the mood hits me, then I can unzip a bit and get ready for those who having probing eyes.
Peekaboo Flashing as a fashion statement or fetish?
I mean most people are never going to see anything -- so I am NOT flashing them against their will [I don't get off on doing that - -although I do not take offense when someone does it to me ]. Most peoples' eyes just don't follow a guy's crotch line UNLESS they are interested. It's when I notice their interest that I can act accordingly.. I can simply pull up my shirt a bit and give an interested observer (as you probably guess having guy's watch is more of a turn on for me) an half-inch or maybe more of peekaboo skin. If they really show interest, then they can get a real eyeful just by my stretching way up and turning around and bending over -- half a crack is exposed. In this form of stealth exhibitionism, I can be careful about who gets to see without offending anyone. Yet, I can please those whose eyes have sought out my crotch (or butt) so that they can actually find what they want to see.
Well, I am not showing this much cock normally -- just making it very obvious
for the viewers on this blog. ->
Walking the dog is where I do most of my freeball showing off. Most mornings I head out the door at 7:00am with my pet on a leash in these see-thru sports shorts. It seems that very few people even actually notice, but once in a while somebody takes a second look. The view is subtle enough that you can't really be sure of what you're seeing except in the right light and then it may take a second look to confirm that they really did see what they thought they say, but that time I'm walking further down the street. So far I've not had anybody chase after me to double check. It's a great feeling freeballing and then having a bit of thrill from the possibilitiy of being seen adds the excitement. I know not every freeballer is doing so to be seen but I can't imagine that guys who wear no underwear can be totally oblivous to the fact that other people will notice the bounce of flesh of their pants.

I know flashing is something more than freeballing and not everyone who visits and participates in this site and in freeballing may personally approve or ever consider it, but accept the fact that some people freeball because it is only one layer away from liberating nudity -- that doesn't mean real exhibitionism -- like jacking off or abusing someone's innocence. Actually I don't have the guts (or should I saw balls) to really flash an 'innocent' person and I wouldn't want to anyway -- although I do go to nude beaches and there are other places to look at nude and semi-nude people and be seen - -lockerrooms, changing in and out of uniforms or at recreation areas. But it turns me on sometimes and gives me a real high -- when I am freeballing to be 'barely dressed' - almost naked under my clothes -- so the loose fit, sagging pants and open fly give me that feeling. If I were ever to encounter somebody who showed interest, then I might be able to pull up my shirt a bit and give 'em a bit of skin.

It is a world apart and great place to be yourself- freeballing or whatever. I am always about half naked (if not completely) when I am spending time on the Big Island. I was in Kailua-Kona in early August and wore some short, see-thru shorts while walking around town late at night. It was cool - except one dude walked by and then turned around said "Hey, dude. You should go put on some pants." I just smiled because it meant he'd been looking and had also looked back at my ass too after he passed.. so I think that fact caught up with him -- he realized he'd been looking at a guy's crotch so I guess he had to call me on it to justify himself.

Idolizing Masculinity through Freeballing
Take guys in the military, for instance -- there must be a great feeling about the camaraderie of being together and facing the possibility of danger/risk of war.. surely that brings guys to share a lot and want to share the same .. so I imagine soldiers and sailors talk about wearing underwear or not, and a lot of cool stuff. I found this collage on the net and while we can't be sure of their freeballing, it sure looks like they are enjoying being close -- freeballing together under those shorts would make them feel even closer.

Seeing friends bathe or your buddies changing into and out of athletic gear without worrying about who was looking or being ashamed of showing off their bodies (genitals are just one part of our bodies -- so why do they get such a bad rap ?). There are not enough models in our societies --especially the US -- but I think there are some other cultures where friends being nude together is not such a big deal and gives nobody any grief -- nor do they suffer any. If this situation were in Europe -- these guys who swim together might very be naked and enjoying it all the same.

Freeballing crosses lifestyle, and gender orientation barriers

Freeballing may remind us of the tension / difference between gay and straight but it is something that brings us together more than it separates.
The interaction on the discussion threads illustrates something I really love about freeballing.com -- I find that freeballing.com is one of the few sites on the Internet as a 'virtual community' and may also be one of the few actual 'communities' where men of all ages, gender preferences and persuasions (including moral and religious) freely mix and interact -- where, for the most part, there is little moralizing or discrimination one way or another.
But again, it may have more to do with how you perceive yourself and your own identity (sexual and beyond). While it may not be readily obvious, what appears to be "conflicts" between members are for the most part handled in a fairly mature and progressive manner.
The real nature of human gender identity and the complexities of male sexuality all come into play here. But no one is blasting away with "I hate faggots" or accusing straight men of being anything else just because we all freeball or show off our sexuality or bond with the people with whom we have a strong affection. I know I'm intellectualizing -- so let me try to make it less academic but still get my point across -- if I can. Freeballing is an act of freeing yourself (at least from one point of view that sounds simplistic -- however, it may be a lot more and a more significant kind of self-liberating act. I think one of the reasons it is considered an alternative practice is because it represents also freeing oneself from the unnatural boundaries forced upon us about our sexual/emotional identities as men in society that is rapidly evolving. By all rights, somehotwink and hungteenfb have NO obligation to try to defend their relationships with their cousins (or younger friends or whomever). I am glad that they do and can -- that is one of the values of this discussion board. I think we should all listen to what people are saying (believe me - it is hard to write in a few sentences enough to explain), and not try to interpret what they are not saying.

I just know that I can get on a philosophical high horse and come across like an academic geek sometimes when I get started writing - especially if I feel I am championing justice and liberty -- that's what we should call it -- libertyballing -- taking up and defending one's right to freeball and fraternalize -- bonding with one's band of fellow men - irrespective of age and without the necessity of any sexual gratification (not 'fraternize' - that's something different.) [ Sorry this probably belongs in a separate blog entry but I'm too lazy/rushed to that now.]

Cross-cultural Perspective on Freeballing

I wonder how many other national costumes or traditional clothes allow for freeballing?
I've spent a lot of time in Japan and a few other countries where the national costume -- kimono or yukata (light summer informal kimono with fundoshi (loin cloth)) (at least it remains one of the traditional ways that some people dress --especialy for festivals or typical Japanese cultural events) does make freeballing sort of accepted.
As I said in an earlier post (Scottish singer in a kilt), I wonder how many national / native or traditional costumes make it easy (or not) to freeball and perhaps to catch a glimpse. We've seen that many guys wearing kilts do not have anything on underneath.

I have lived at times in Japan and still have strong connections to it. I find the kimono and in particular the yukata give a great opportunity to freeball. The traditional kimono, which is really as formal nowadays as a tuxedo and not worn very often at all, does not work out very well for freeballing -- mainly because it is worn for ceremonial events and people are not likely to move around much. The kimono is also worn tightly bound and can have several undergarments and belts (obi) so that it is not likely to come open. Damn, it must even be difficult to take a leak or squat to use the bathroom. However, the yukata is quite a bit different. It is a casual summer kimono-like one piece outfit -- typically worn for festivals and as night wear / indoor wear at hotsprings resorts and fine hotels.

Traditionally, Japanese men (and there are some people who do still) wear the yukata and its shorter version (the happi coat) as casual wear -- although mostly it is only during the summer and fall festivals, but a few for daily wear especially during the hot humid summer season. Under the yukata -- and sometimes ONLY without even the yukata-- is worn the traditional Japanese loincloth called the "fundoshi." It is not exactly underwear because it can be worn as swimwear or beach wear, as festival gear, and as an undergarment for a yukata (or kimono). Normally, only men wear a fundoshi, but some guys think it is very sexy for women to wear them .. so you sometimes see women in porno wearing a fundoshi.

Fundoshi is not really about freeballing -- it is a wrap that curls up from behind and under and can even tightly bind your balls, but it certainly does not leave much to the imagination once in place. There are a couple of styles - -the one for festivals is often twisted into a knotty rope like a thong and rides up the crack of your ass. Other style leave a hanging cover of the front so it's a bit hard to see the guy's encased mound of cock and balls, but this flying droop moves and floats around so you do get a view sometimes.

I'm not Japanese and don't have much chance to wear a yukata or fundoshi, but I have an acquaintance in Japan who has been after me to try them. He is a Buddhist priest who is about 35, married with two small children. The place I stay is just next door to the temple so he invariably invites me over when he knows I am in Japan. Perhaps he is just trying to be nice by introducing me to traditional Japanese culture -- Japanese are not very big on evangelical Buddhism (although I hear it does exist). On a recent trip to Tokyo, he insisted on measuring me for a yukata and told me he would have onr made for me and then show me how to wear it and we would go to a fireworks festival wearing a yukata. While he was measuring me, he got down on his knees in front of me (apparently in total innocence) but it sure made me wonder. He first had me pull off my trousers and then he measured about my waist and hips while I standing there in a bare of almost mesh semi see-thru boxers. I had to pull my t-shirt down over the front to conceal what could have been a eyeful of my semi-freeballing. The next day he came running up to me again and wanted to measure me again -- he thought he might have made a mistake so it surely did get me to questioning his motives. For now, I will assume he has only my "cross-cultural" education at heart and nothing else. I do have to say that it will be interesting if he wants to teach me how to wear a fundoshi next!

There are a few different types of 'fundoshi' style (Japanese loincloths). I guess you might say they are more like "freebutting" instead of freeballing, but what the hell, I think they look pretty cool. This photo above shows a guy's full body tatoo (irezumi) -- still quite popular with a certain segment of the Japanese -- it was strongly associated with gangsters (yakuza) but less so nowadays. Notice the twisted rope effect in the crack of his fundoshi -- wonder what that feels like -- maybe it helps keeps his semi-hard so that the spectators can enjoy the festival "show" even more. You can see different lengths of "happi" coats in this pic-- so the fundoshi is not really meant to be covered up -- although it can serve as underwear -- it is more like a 400 year old Japanese Speedo bikini or gym shorts.

Finding pics of freeballing
I wish it were easy to tell you where to find photos of men in uniform. While there are some sites devoted to sexual activities of military men - I don't actually really collect those and won't be posting them here - -since that's not what this site is about. I don't know of any one source that would have so many photos of men in uniform (who are freeballing) - unless you are willing to pay to join (which I am not).
I found these in various places: Yahoo groups, also just by searching Google images, others were mixed in with some other photos -- like someone's private gallery on their personal web page. Justusboys.com allows members to keep up to hundreds of photos to share with others (a free service). You sometimes run across a few in the amateurs self-postings or discussion boards, such as dudesnude.com

It took a bit of searching and also over an extended period of time.
What I typically do is to save photos I run across on the net by category (or even in multiples categories - like a red head, military guy in uniform who is freeballing (or exposing). I have different folders for main categories and then make sub-folders. I tend to like photos that are realisitic with guys who are genuinely engaged in whatever they're doing -- whether freeballing while shopping or strolling through town or goofing off in the lockerroom, or pulling some antics -- like mooning at a frat party, etc. I also tend to get stimulated by one (or two) certain categories so I'll look for and save those types of photos for a while -- that's what's happened recently with uniforms and guys in boardshorts. I also have a pretty large collection of guys in sports -- both on an off the field (I don't mean porn but mostly real photos of athletes in action, partying, horsing around in the lockeroom, etc) -- but something like that is easier to find a whole website devoted too -- such as http://www.gaysports.co.uk/

Nude Beaches on Hawaii: Kehena Black Sand Beach, Puna

Here is a pic of one of the body-surfer types you're likely to see on Kehena Black Sands Beach. No, I did NOT take the photo -- although I like to admire, I respect my photos subjects and would always ask first. It is rude to take a camera to a nude beach and that's the easiest way to NOT be invited back. Because nudity is popular here and ignored by most people -- esp the authorities, both Kehena and also Diamond Head Beach (Honolulu) are sometimes used for nude photos shoots for fashion mags, Hustler/Penthouse type spreads. It's more common to see naked women/models than nude men as the subject of the photos shoots. However, as a rule, the number of nude men just enjoying the beach usually outnumber the women 4:1. It depends too on if there is a weekend or holiday gathering going on.

Of course, the age span varies widely - but I find that there is a tendency to get a lot of teenagers, young adults at Kehena along with the saggy boobed and wrinkled skin seniors too. There is a nice vacation home community that starts just a minute's walk west of the beach -- up on Hwy 137 - the Red Road. So you get a teenage boy and his younger brother down with the nudies.. it's cool and also cute when the teenager comes down to the beach -- casually takes off his boardshorts while the younger pre-pubescent brother keeps his on. That happened the last time I was there. On afternoons after school and on weekends there are always kids from 1-71 on the black sand or in the waves. It's a place where you can actually swim with dolphins or at least see them and the humpback whales (Dec-March for the latter). But every one is welcomed on Kehena - gay/str8 / young and old, singles/couples, all creeds/ethicities/persuasions and lifestyles. It is NOT a GQ / Cosmopolitan type beach for the fashion conscious. Nudity and the freeball-easy clothing are the norm here and also the great leveler of personal status.

Kalani and Kehena - clothing optional camping / beaches

Hey, nakid, when it gets closer to the time you start actually planning a trip to Hawaii -- let me know and I'll fill you in on more exactly where (at least Oahu and Hawaii -- I don't know Mauai, Kauai very well). Maybe I'll let you stay on my property -- it's nothing but a square acre partly forested land - but someday I'll have built it up more like a outdoor camp or maybe a bungalow. It's not near the ocean -- so you'll probably enjoy more staying at a place like Kalani Resort (not free but has camping at $20 per night for a tent site). Kalani has a large pool with hot tubs and sauna which is clothing optional after 5pm every day. Kalani is within walking distance to Kehena Black Sands beach and that's nude all year long - very mixed set of people who hang out at Kehena -- as well as at Kalani. BTW, you might be able to get a job at Kalani -- they have a program for temporary work-stays (pays your room and board in exchange for some work). There are usually some really cool guys and gals -- from young people to seniors are needed for various kinds of work (kitchen, grounds, guest services, etc) and for teaching classes too. You could also look into temp jobs elsewhere around the islands if you wanted to stay longer. Oahu has a very adequate public bus system that can get you almost anywhere on the island you want to go. The Big Island is a different story -- you'll either have to hitch rides (very doable in Puna (southeast region where I've been describing) or share a rental car - although there may be very limited bus service between major points. It's by picking up hitchers that I kind of stay tuned to the local vibes and also what the 'visitors' are doing - some are homesteading or housesetting, or just making ends meet by doing odd jobs etc. I've almost never been asked for money -- just rides or maybe cigs (but I don't smoke). Some of the people I've picked up are just living for a while on the island because they can and they like the laid-back life. Actually, there are always some people staying/camping on Kehena Beach -- I guess you have to call them 'hippies' - I mean that's exactly what they look like and how they live -- most of the guys seem to let their hair grow long and they braid it and twist into a Rastafarian (sp?) reggae style. They often wear long flowing shirts with or without pants and are obviously anti-underwear - there are women too, but fewer actually live/camp on the beach -- although there are all kinds of people there, especially on the weekends. It's really cool on Sundays when dozens -- even hundreds of people gather on Kehena to dance, play music, and enjoy partying/socializing/smoking. The hippie guys and gals never hesitate to join in and love to get naked and gyrate, cavort to the ethnic beat that the drummers and other amateur musicians have gathered to improvise.

Why that's amusing .. it's more fun to watch for dolphins and whales (not the beached types) and to look at the cool board-type male and female bodies (many who aren't wearing any at the moment) throw themselves into the crashing waves trying to bodysurf or boogie board. Hey. I've gone on way to long.... Below is a pic of me walking back from Kehena Black Sands Beach, it's in a sheltered lagoon under a cliff face (so it's not public exposure and so too why some people camp out there - discreetly, of course) -- I am freeballing in my see-thru mesh shorts. I can't wait to get back there after Xmas - just after I leave LA from a few days in the Cali desert.

Naked Camping for Gay Men

Camping in Hawaii

I'll be camping Dec 25-31 just near this place (taken last year). I sometimes wear my shorty board shorts while out on the rocky black lava shore of Puna, Big Island Hawaii. You can see that I am freeballing (and later got naked too).

I know it's not authentic.. but the photo reminds of those days when I used to go camping and also staying at summer camp. They look like they are probably freeballing.

=================================

If you have that long a time to spend, you'll probably be able to do the same on the Hawaiian islands -- it's a little known fact that there are quite a few county and state parks, in addition there is one National Park (Volcanoes NP) that have camp sites. None of those are officially (or even unofficially nude) -- but it never stops me if there's nobody around from getting that way. Still, the public park campgrounds supposedly require a permit - but in reality, I doubt that many people get one. As long as you don't camp too long in one spot, no one is likely to check up on you -- although technically they could and would if you tried camping on Oahu's Waikiki beaches or Kona's beaches on the west (and more touristy) side of the Big Island. Although if you don't put up a tent, you could probably get away with it on Diamond Head beach (past Waikiki) -- if you get up in the hill side nooks and crannies.

Of course, you have to watch out for the guys cruising for sex up there too [you'd not doubt be targeted]. But if there are two of you hooked together in one sleeping, they'll probably figure it best to leave you alone. There will also be plenty of places on the Big Island where you can camp on private property (if you not TOO noisy during the night[smile]). Now that gets the imagination going - fo'sure! -- I can just imagine what that Aussie dude was thinking because I know I would get turned on by the sounds of passion -- whoever it was going at it in the tent next door!

Naked Camping

Camping, hiking, outdoor recreation are my favorities (along with scuba diving) so freeballing goes without saying. When I can, I also get naked too -- even when it's not a nudist camp. Fife's Ranch on the Russian River is a great place for that - except for holidays and the weekends, it's not too crowded and there is always 'space' to get naked down on the river itself. Some of the hot springs mentioned above would be great places too. I've been a couple of times to places in California and also in Oregon. Even skinnydipped at Yosemite in crowded mid-summer season one year. I hope to go nude hiking and camping in the Anza-Borrego State Park in San Diego County this winter and again in the spring.

Camping has such a special meaning for me because it was really while camping or at summer camp that I got to see guys my age and also older (like the adults and camp counselor) naked but it was the wholesome, good-natured expression of fun, self-confidence with one's body, and being close to other guys that was the most significant. I guess some of them were freeballing too but I don't really remember focusing on that fact. It was the
skinnydipping, or changing in the tent or cabins, getting ready for bed, and sometime sleeping nude next to your buddies -- those were times that made indelible memories for me that I remember fondly. I am going camping in the desert of Southern Calif just before Christmas and will also be on the Big Island for camping -- both of which will be mostly nude.

I used to have some land (an acre) near Pahoa which is partly wooded and the nearest neighbors are few so that I could get nude while camping there -- we'll be there the week after Xmas. Kehena Black Sands beach is not far away -- so it is a nude mixed beach --- with a lot of people there on the weekends -- and some cool dudes who love to bodysurf naked. Just up the road is Kalani resort where I sometimes camp out.. it's not nude camping, but the pool area is clothing-optional after 3pm. So it's pretty cool. This photo reminds me of my own teenage camping trips. I guess I 'm sort of trying to relive them when I go camping now...

Hawaii Nudist and Gay Beaches (Oahu and the Big Island)

Hawaii Nudism and possible cruising in Hawaii
- REPUBLISHED May 28, 2008, revised October 2008, Revised Sept 2012

(Note: Some info may not be accurate since conditions change - such is the nature of nudism across the world - the weather and erosion, changes in attitudes of the local community and prohibition or surveillance by law enforcement or public park authorities may cause significant changes to the 'facts' listed in the article below).
Sorry for the canned and somewhat disorganized article below but I frequently get requests about his topic so I have a standard blog entry and just keep adding more to it.
If you have more specific questions later, I'll try to answer them. But for now, I hope this general introduction to Hawaii nude beaches and gay spots will help.

The first part is mainly about Oahu. There is specific information about The Big Island, Hawaii, and Maui at the end of this article.

Nude beaches, heh? Do they exist in the Hawaii islands?

Yes, but proceed with some caution because except for a couple of places (not on Oahu), nude sunbathing is considered illegal.

Warning: Nudity on public beaches is illegal. Do not do so without taking adequate precautions to be discreet. However, there are a few places where it is tolerated (or at least overlooked) by the authorities. However, most of these are NOT located on Oahu. Nevertheless, nude sunbathing does happen on Oahu (the main island, where Honolulu and its famous, Waikiki Beach is located).

Queen's Surf
There is a section of Waikiki Beach called Queen's Surf -- where you guessed it - the queens gathers. No, not drag queens (LOL), but gay men tend to gather there. It's passed the Honolulo Zoo and it located just two hundred yards from the Waikiki Aquarium. You find it just passed the snack shop/restroom. However, there is absolutely no nudity on this very public part of the beach. Many people don't even notice and you're likely to have families or tourist/visitors sitting near or even among the 'guys' on the grass lawn just across the beach side sidewalk.

Diamond Head Beach (Lighthouse Beach)
For nudism, the closest place to Waikiki where you can go to a gay and sometimes discreetly nude beach on Oahu is at Diamond Head Beach (below the Light House). It can be cruisy but you need to be aware that it is part of a public beach and not everybody walking down along the shore is a guy looking for sex. Tourists, people walking their pets, and families sometimes walk thru and even stop to enjoy the beach too. However, it does get cruisy at times -- sometimes best when the sun has started to set or after sunset. Just be discreet and cover up if somebody who looks like a cop comes thru. I have never seen a police office or been stopped myself but I've "heard" that arrests have been made for public indecency. I have received a parking ticket - so don't park where it is prohibited or after posted hours. There are places to "hide", ledges to sun nude without being seen from below and I've had some wild times there both in broad daylight and after dusk.

To get there..
From the east end of Waikiki, you can drive there or it is even possible to walk (20-30 minute walk across and down along Kapiolani Park) to its eastern end and then walk up about 700 yards to the drive way that goes down to Light House Beach. You can't miss Diamond Head crater's peak looming overhead -- which can be seen from anywhere in Honolulu. If you drive, then you can follow Kalakaua east to the Zoo and then continue due east along Kapiolani Park to its end and then turn right on Diamond Head road. There is a small road down the beach -- but there is limited parking there (don't leave a car at most Diamond Head Road street parking after 10pm or as posted!!)

If driving, it is easier sometimes to go on passed the light house and look for parking up at the look-out point(s) along Diamond Head Road. As any place in Honolulu - don't leave valuables in your car and don't park where people can easily sneak up and open your car -- car break-in are the highest in the country in Honolulu -- more than NYC by far.
If you're really worried then drive (or take bus (#14) or a taxi and then walk back to the nearest bus stop or all the way back to Waikiki) -- good exercise too. The walk through Kapiolani Park either way is beautiful. On the beach side parallel with the Park and eventually leading to Waikiki proper just across from the Zoo (at the interection of Kalakaua and Kapahulu) is the extension of Waikiki Beach. There you'll find Queen's Surf Beach between the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium, where a lot of gays hang out - but there in NO NUDITY absolutely at such a public place.

Being Discreet and Avoiding Trouble
You should know that public (beach) nudity is illegal in Hawaii (as in most US States) -- this is posted at most beaches -- and there has evidently been more police patrolling of Light House beach. But I myself have never seen a police officer on the beach -- although the stories / rumors keep going around. My advice is don't be blatant -- it is a public beach with families and tourists -- who don't expect to see a nude guy especially one with a hard-on or engaged in sexual activity. They are probably the ones who call the police (if they ever do come down to look for "sex perverts".) I prefer to stay up above the beach -- (but not TOO high) or the tourist at the look-out point above can see you -- and have towel/swimsuit to cover up if somebody obviously NOT gay comes snooping around.

Nonetheless, I've had some good "looks" and quite a lot of sex in the bushes and in the coves/nooks, especially around dusk. If you aren't interested in the cruising part, then you can just enjoy the sun and see what other guys do. They can't arrest you for thongs or skimpy bikinis in any case.

Mokuleia (near Polo Field) on the North Shore (Oahu)
(part of a discussion Yahoo! Group Hawaii Nudist -- it is not very active, but there was information about a North Shore 'nudist' beach - Mokuleia.)

Since there are no legal nude beaches on Oahu or its too far to go there, some guys do lie out on the north shore near the Polo Fields at Mokuleia. Others lie out at Diamond head below the lighthouse right outside Waikiki. (by Honolulust)

The beach on the North Shore (Polo Fields) is much nicer than the Diamond Head lighthouse beach. The water is clearer, cleaner and much more secluded. At the end of the public access trail, go to the right for the gay nude area. As you walk you will see a bushy wooded area.
That's the gay area. You can situate yourself on the beach or in the little areas in the bushes. I 've had some very hot sessions on that beach!
(by Musl2Pound)

I'm still not sure where that beach is - Polo Fields at Mokuleia. Is in off of Crozier Dr. (the street closest to the shore) or is it further west out Farrington Hwy? If you don't have a car (a tourist
or visitor) would you be out of luck? I mean is it worth take a bus to Waialua and then walking?
(These question are from sunbuns99 - p.s. Nobody ever answered my questions so I still don't know much about Mokuleia (May 2008). You can find the place and the polo fields on Google maps.)

Further out from Honolulu toward East Oahu

If you want a lot of privacy and have much more free time, then you could take a drive out H1 East -- passed Hawaii Kai area and passed Hanauma Bay (which is not cruisy at all - but a wonderful short trip -- you can rent snorkeling gear (closes at 4:30pm). After Hanauma Bay -- there is the blow-hole and look-out points where you can sometimes catch glimpses of humpback whales (from the shore). Continuing on passed Sandy Beach,(smooth and with big green fields) you'll come to a rather deserted rough beach -- at the far eastern end -- guys sometimes go nude because there are lots of bushes, low rises and make-shift rock shelters to hide your butt and balls --except from those who are eager to find. Still, it can be very hot -- no water and rather isolated -- so don't stay there after dark -- sometimes car doors are pried open while guys are out "sunning" themselves.

WARNING: Nowadays, the thieves don't both to pry open the locks, they just take a big rock and smash the driver's side window in order to get in. DO NOT LEAVE anything --- visible or not, the risk of vandalism remains high.

I hate to sound so CAUTIOUS but people who live locally can read the signs and know what to expect, but I don't want to give you (perhaps a tourist for the first time) a lot of over-confidence. If you live in NYC, you should already have street smarts -- but they are different in every place -- and Oahu has its own street culture -- that's for sure. Fortunately, it's pretty laid back and relaxed. Hawaii has one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the US -- although the property crime ranks at one of the highest -- especially automobile theft and (break-in) robbery.

Further out from Honolulu toward West Oahu (toward Makaha)

Most tourists don't even bother to drive out to this part of the island because the road (Farrington Hwy eventually stop out by Makua Valley a few miles passed Makaha) Civilizations stop too - it's pretty wild country. There are some great views along the way and also some totally deserted expanses of sandy beaches bordered by rocky coast line -- but no cliffs, so it's easy to get down to the water. I've bicycled out there (I used to stay in a vacation condo in Makaha a lot) along the highway and found many spots to sunbathe in the nude privately.
Local fisherman and some a few tourists might come up on you - but if you have a towel handy to cover up it's no problem.

NOTE* BIG PROBLEM TO AVOID (automobile robbery - breaking/entering thefts)-- Robbery of vehicles is a BIG problem here. So.. take everything out of the car and open the windows. If the would-be robbers (who usually drive up in a car with darkly tinted windows, see that you have nothing worth taking and you don't even lock the car, then they figure there is nothing worth smashing the windows to try to get.
( Keep you bicycle/motorcycle in plain sight, too)

Yes, it's kind of scary - but it is STILL worth going out there by all means - if you take simple precautions.

If you go to Yokohama Beach -- just a bit after Makua Valley Military Practice Firing Range, you see a public parking lot and because there are military guards on duty (sometimes), there is less possibililty of a car robbery if you park there. From that point, you can walk / hike further north out to Kaena Point (described below).

Kaena Point: In fact, at the far northwestern tip of Oahu is an amazing natural park. Kaena Point is a federal (or state?) nature preserve on the tip of the islands perhaps thousand of acres in size. It's amazing because here you can co-mingle with nesting albatross, a species native to Hawaii, or watch them flying over head, there are sea turtles cavorting in the rough waves, and sometimes you can get close to Hawaiian monk seals sunbathing on the long sandy beaches.
Be sure to take plenty of drinking water and sunscreen -- there are hardly any places to find shade and it takes about 30 minutes to reach the park and another 30-60 to walk around (or reach the North Shore exit on the far side).

I've gone nude hiking there myself because it is pretty deserted (however, not completely - because you'll encounter one or two other people with 'nature on their minds'. There are even some old bunkers (probably left over from WWII days or prior to that) for 'shelter' from wind (not from the sun bearing down). The Waianae Mountain Range which you followed all along the western (leeward) coast of Oahu slopes down to a small hillside by the time it reaches this western-most point of the island.
No cars can get through to Kaena Point - but it's possible to take a bicycle through it and then head back east and reach the North Shore (on foot)-- the sand / terrain makes riding any thing but a mountain bike difficult until you reach pavement. I have been there in a few years so I can say what the conditions are on the trails coming from the Makua Valley side. You should check or ask local or local Internet sites before you go. Likehike is a gay-friendly hiking club that meets regularly for hiking excursions to many places on the island - they should be able to provide you with up-to-date information on trails to and from Kaena Point. Of course, this mainly gay outdoor recreation group are a bunch of nature enthusiasts so they aren't particularly intersted in nudism or nude hiking (but I'm sure there are individuals members who can give good advice and information about that once you join one of their outings/hiking - mainly scheduled on the Saturdays.

P.S. I believe it is possible to follow the Waianae Mountains ridges to reach Kaena Point - but I have never done so myself.

Cruising Spots

See the local gay magazines for other "ideas" if you're trying to cruise... (links below)

Diamond Head Beach (under the Light House)
   See the description above

Old Natatorium (Waikiki Beach, just beyond the Aquarium)
The old swimming meet stadium (or Natatorium) is no longer used, except as a dressing rooms, and restrooms, showers for men and women (separate).  The men's toilet and showers can get cruisy from time to time - although there are many locals (especially homeless individuals) who use it to get cleaned up (cold showers).

Kapiolani Park (across from the Aquarium,  mauka side)
It's rare to find but does exist. Sometimes guys, particularly tourists, cruise among the trees at night in the park.   Be careful of police surveillance.

Max's Gym - located on the 4F of 444 Hobron Lane, approximately two blocks off of Ala Moana Blvd. Turn left (heading into Waikiki) onto Hobron Street (McD's and ABC Store are on the corner). This is the first left after you cross the Ala Wai Canal bridge (marina is on the right side of this bridge) - just one block for the Waikiki end of Ala Moana Center. Go down Hobron Street two short blocks, and the building with Max's is just to your left as your turn right. NOTE* The gym has two sections (not connected) - one is the gym and the other is the sauna/private rooms part. That's where guys got to cruise. WARNING: They are very strict about bringing in alcohol, etc, therefore, NO BAGS of any kind are allowed. You should leave anything that does not fit in your pockets back at the hotel or at home. They refuse entry to backpacks, shoulder bags, and hip pouches. (August 2007)

I love the west side of Oahu - the leeward coast -- I get nude there -- although I am not flashing or exposing myself (normally). There is a place(s) on the North Shore of Oahu too, but I've never been there to those so-called 'nude' beaches.

I can also recommend the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai, which do have some great gay beaches -- but you can find more at the site below or check out names such Little Beach at Makena State Park (Maui), Honokohau Beach, and Kehena Black Sands beach (both on Hawaii, The Big Island) just by googling them along with nude or gay as keywords.

In Odyssey, look at the ON OAHU section or the BEYOND OAHU section to see what to do and where to go -- not an extensive listing since this is paid for advertising but a start.

======= Big Island and Maui

Gay beaches in the Hawaii islands (brief version and longer versions) see both below

Diving nude on the Big Island
and other posts.
http://sunbuns.blogspot.com/2006/11/diving-nude-on-big-island.html

Kehena Beach

Fine black sand distinguishes this small secluded beach on the Puna coast. On Hwy. #137, one mile from Kalani Eco-Resort at the Mile Marker 19 phone booth. Wear sturdy sneakers for lava rock trail to beach. Nude sunbathing (unless authorities decide to enforce anti-nudity regulations). Caution: strong currents and undertow.

Waialea Bay “Beach 67”  (sometimes mistakenly referred to as 'Beach 69')

Wailea Bay Marine Preserve's two beaches are nicknamed 69 and 67. Beach 69 is the larger and is great for snorkeling and diving. Beach 67, on the north side of the bay, is smaller and frequented by naturists and gay men. On Hwy. #19 at Mile Marker 71, turn into Puako Village, then right onto old Puako Road. Access Beach 67 by taking the gravel road at telephone pole #67, onward to the bluff, then hiking down to the beach. Nude sunbathing (unless authorities decide to enforce anti-nudity regulations).

Maui (Island)

“Little Beach” at Makena

http://mauiguidebook.com/beaches/makena-little-beach/

About one mile south of the Maui Prince Hotel in Makena, turn right at the second paved road to the parking lot. Walk to the beach, turn right, and hike over the promontory at the end to "Little Beach." The far end is the gayest. Nude sunbathing is the custom (unless authorities decide to enforce anti-nudity regulations). View State Beach info.

LIttle Beach at Makena State Beach is definitely a mixed beach - there are clothed and unclothed, families, tourists, locals, groups of friends and gay couples and single men.

There is no restroom at Little Beach -- so it's into the woods or hike back to the Big Beach, where the is a restroom, picnic tables,  and lifeguards.
Behind the Little Beach is a wooded hillside, so there are many places to get some shade, but no other amenities.

MORE complete description of the Big Island beaches BELOW:

Kehena Black Sands Beach
There are several of 'nude' beaches around the Big Island - the largest and most 'official' (being that the nudity there is just accepted by the local authorities/police/community is the Kehena Black Sands Beach at milemarker 19 on Hwy 137 (Kalapana-Kapoho Road (Puna's coastal road).
It's crowded on Sundays - with all kinds of people -families, hippies, locals, gays, tourist, etc..- many engaged in 'trance dance' but a lot of people are picniking, partying, and just having fun. On quiet days and times, there is sometimes cruising in the far left area of the beach.

Kalani (see info at Kalani.com is a gay-friendly resort not far from Kehena - it has a clothing optional pool (after 4pm).

There are other places where people get naked / nude swimming/sunbathing:

Honokohau (on US National park property at Kaloko-Honokohau National Reserve:
DIRECTIONS to
Take Highway 19 north from Kailua-Kona. Turn left between (4-5 miles out of town) Mile Markers #97 and 98. Take the first right and then park in the north lot of Honokohau Harbor and Marina, and then walk on into the K-HNP (reserve) and take the trail to this beach, past Ai'opio Beach. Although nudity is prohibited - it's still pretty common for gay to men to discreetly disrobe (get naked and cruise) in the area to the far right. Park rangers do patrol - but not that frequently (or maybe I've just been lucky).

Beach 67 (sometimes mistakenly called Beach 69)
Another 'unofficial' nude beach can be found in South Kohala (past Waikoloa) about 30 miles north of Kona (often times one of the sunniest places on the Big Island) and between Puako and Hapuna State Beach Park and not too far from the junction on Hwy 19 that lead to Kawaiihae (left) and Waimea (right). It's called Beach 67 (although you'll probably here more about Beach 69 (also known as Wailea or Waialea Beach). Wailea is certainly a beautiful tree-lined stretch of beach(es) in and among a sheltered cove (partly bordered by private property). But Beach 67 (telephone pole number - NOT milemaker) is located further north and is a much small beach where clothing optional is enjoyed by all.
To reach it follow the sign to turn off of Hwy 19 toward Hapuna State Beach Park (A large parking lot with additional parking above - there are hundreds of cars)
Go passed the Hapuna entrance and continue along the rough road about 600 feet further, you see a dirt road leading up to a ridge that overlooks the north end of Wailea. Park where the other cars (there won't be too many) and head downhill, coming through the trees to the small beach where nudity is accepted (if not encouraged. BTW, Wailea Beach (Beach 69) is the about 300 ft further passed Beach 67 - there is a longer driveway up the the entrance - usually there are a lot of cars. Note: you can also come in from the Puako side, existing Hwy 19 at Puako, and then making a right on the beach access road (mostly unpaved). So you first reach Wailea Beach (Beach 69) and then come to telephone pole 67 next - in the middle of the next rise (the entrance looks more like a dirt bike track).

Hope you enjoy getting some 'sun' on your buns on your trip to Hawaii.
Aloha!

Puna: Paradise -- Not lost on those who dare

Puna: The southeast district of the Big Island is a veritable paradise. While it must be remembered that even Paradise has a dark and sinistre side, you cannot go wrong for making this your next budget-adventure-econaturist vacation spot.
