Life in Japan: Acceptance of gays Part I

I found this on a forum about learning Japanese. It was written by Sean who was a working for while in the country as an English language teacher on the government JET program.

As a gay man in Japan, I have some experience speaking about gays are treated (accepted or not), so let me give my 2 yen's worth. First, there is no religious bias from most Japanese. Historically, many Japanese have been homosexual. It is reported (or at least rumored that) some Buddhist temples in Japan actually kept young men {even young boys at time, sadly} specifically because they were beautiful and the monks would have regular sexual encounters with them, and samurai often had relationships with their "squires" or "apprentices" {not sure what the Japanese word for that is} ) according to some of the gay literature I have read here.

That said, there is a strong bias, not against same sex acts, but against a homosexual lifestyle, because it is not within the traditional Japanese lifestyle. A youth is expected to go to school, get a job, get married, have kids, and support the family by doing so. Someone who falls outside of that pattern is instantly regarded with suspicion and even contempt by many traditional Japanese. Obviously, a homosexual relationship and lifestyle falls well outside that pattern.

I would liken Japanese homosexual culture to that of America in the early 70's, without the active persecution or violence of that time. Most people don't even consider it (you'd be AMAZED how many Japanese have told me that there are no gay Japanese...hand to god!) Those that do, often consider it a choice (and not a good one) and somehow deficient, although many women do consider it hip and cool to have a gay male friend. There is a lot of confusion, incidentally, even in the language, about the difference between being gay, trangendered and transvestite. In fact, most words in the Japanese language make no distinction between the different identities. Ironically, while homosexuality as a lifestyle is looked at askance, entertainers who break the gender boundaries are incredibly popular, both as objects of amusement and as legitimate entertainers.

This leads to many Japanese having confusion about or denial of their orientation. The Japanese closet is deep. Almost all the gay Japanese men I have met over 30 are also married with children. Many of their wives even know that they are gay. It seems that as long as they have fulfilled the obligation to the community of a wife and children, it is tolerated. Some just look at it as a physical thing (and the stereotype is that this sort of Japanese man is very unaffectionate with their partners in gay sex; no kissing or any form of emotional attachment is formed); that they simply want sex with a man as an urge to be satisfied. This attitude is also held by many heterosexual Japanese about homosexuals, that it is simply a physical urge, not a life-altering orientation.

Many other gay Japanese men go the far opposite extreme, becoming extremely effeminate in all their behavior; sometimes even dressing and appearing as women (although not quite to the degree of transvestism). Rather than hiding it, they embrace the stereotype that Japanese culture places on them and in fact seem to be throwing it back in that culture's face.

Gay bars and gay-oriented businesses are few and far between outside of the metropolises (such as Tokyo's Shinjuku Nichome) and compared to the America, even those venues are small. For instance, Nichome has approximately 200 gay bars (according to Fodor's) in the neighborhood, but from personal experience I can tell you that aside from a very few, these bars have a seating capacity of 6-15 people...they are bars, not clubs. There are also occasionally places in the most out-of-the-way towns that would shock you...my small town does not have a gay bar (or in fact any night clubs) but it does have a transexual snack/hostess bar! HOW it stays open in this town, I couldn't even tell you...

There are quite a few small gay newspapers and magazines published in Japan, and they tend to be very discrete in delivery. In the larger cities, there are gay encounter/social groups as well.

Now, a bit of good news for foreigners coming to Japan...usually, Japanese have NO problem with homosexual foreigners. Remember, we are expected to not conform to Japanese culture (which can work for and against us in many situations) and so without any religious bias against homosexuality, we slip unscathed under the "conformity" radar...it's just one more weird thing about you, like eating raw vegetables, hating natto and wearing non-white shirts to work.

However, there seems to be a bit of mild prejudice about us working with kids (or maybe not...I'll explain). A few of the teachers I work/have worked with who know my orientation have told me it would be better for me not to talk about it, as some parents might be uncomfortable with me being in charge of their kids. On the other hand, several of my gay JET friends are not only out at the schools they teach at, but they have even taught lessons on homosexuality in other countries and how it is received there, without any negative fallout. So it could be that the teachers who spoke to me were simply being extra cautious, or my friends could have been lucky.

I hope this is useful to you, or at least informative. Smile

Maspalomas (Lighthouse Beach), Gran Canaria, Spain

The article below is a retrospective on Maspalomas, the sand dunes beach, located on the southern tip of Gran Canaria, one of the Spain's Canary Islands off the coast of Morocco.
Beside being probably one of the world's largest clothing-optional beaches (especially if you include the large sand dunes area behind it), it is also a naturally scenic desert-type chain of volcanic islands (none are active now).  It's has an arid climate with little rainfall. The sand accumulates over the centuries from what is blown to the islands from Morroco's eastern shores of the Sahara.   Some of the sand dudes are in huge drifts upwards of 30-50 meters high.
I (Kelly) have traveled there for each March for the past five years. There are great opportunities for some casual CMNM situations, and there is hardly any place like it as far as wild outdoor and even public sex (mostly between men), but also a lot of hetero couple and partner-swapping fantasies are being lived out for real.

Atitlan wrote:
On my first visit to Maspalomas in the Canary Islands, off the African coast, this part of the beach was practically deserted. There was one hotel by the lighthouse but almost nothing else. Further along, past what is now the gay beach and around the corner towards Playa de Ingles, I could put my clothes in my backpack and walk naked for ages without seeing a single soul, as people hid in craters with stone walls to protect themselves from the wind.

Now the whole 3 miles(?) of beach from the lighthouse to Playa del Ingles is crowded. What it does mean is that there are many hundreds of naked men to be seen on the beach and in the dunes. And there's a busy nightlife too in this all-year-round resort area. After Playa started to become a gay destination in the mid 80s, several clothing-optional gay hotels opened up. Few now offer this facility, the result I imagine of overlooking buildings that went up in the property boom. Here's one I've found that still is clothing optional:

Welcome to Fire Island, boys!

These photos remind me so much of the nude/gay beach at Gandia, Spain (about one hour south of Valencia). I was there recently and saw scenes just like the ones in these pics. It was a long walk (about 1.5 miles at least) from the main beach-side resort at Playa de Gandia north up to spot with nothing - no shops or water or restrooms.

I have actually never been to Fire Island (Long Island, NY) so now I know what I have been missing (or not - as the case may be). Like Gandia's gay beach, I wonder if there was a lot of cruising going on in the dunes up behind and beyond the main beach. While there was some cruising, it seems that many men were reluctant to engage in sex out in the open - although I saw at least a couple of hook-ups. Unfortunately, I couldn't get such luck.

Live CMNM: Folsom Street Fair 2009 San Francisco, Pics 91-93

I heard the Pumpkin Parade was canceled on Halloween this year, but the Folsom Street Fair in SF went over big.  I would love to attend, but the timing is never good for me. It's got to be hotter than Southern Decadence (New Orleans) - although there's certainly more street 'fair' like ambiance in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Where else (except for Pride and Mardi Gras Carnival) can men get almost naked and/or actually bare assed or erotically costume-less on public streets of the US?  WNBR is one such event. Anyone know of others? Other countries?     Add a comment to inform the readers (and me).

For anybody who will be in Honolulu for Xmas weekend (Dec 25-28), we'll be putting on the CMNM Festa Events on Dec 25 (Nasty Santa and the Naughty Elves Party - meet up at Hula's Bar (Waikiki Grand Hotel) at 7:00pm, then proceed to a private accommodation for the Clothed Male / Naked Male party.  There are outdoors events (Catamaran Excursion and Nude Hiking), and a No Pants Party on Saturday (and Sunday daytime), and a CMNM Role Play Party on Sunday night.    Visit http://crush3r.com/page/wrmdntwgly to RVSP asap.

The Scenic Boys: Gay Men to Idolize or Idealize

[Revised and slightly updated from the Scenic Boys Facebook Fan Page by Kelly Lewis]

Visit the Scenic Boys (blog) at: http://scenicboys.typepad.com/

They are young, cute, gay and Very Eco-Friendly. Dusty and Garet live in Seattle and started making videos a few years ago (posted on Vimeo) to accompany their delightful and very readable blog, which was recently nominated for one of Lonely Planet's Best Travel Blog Awards. Dusty and Garet describe themselves this way:

[We are] boyfriends, naturalists, adventure seekers and photographers. [The blog tells] where they and friends go on outdoor recreation trips. We're two 28 year old boys from the Pacific Northwest. We've been together for 3 years and live in downtown Seattle with our kitty, Tonka.

I have to add, too, that they are consummate naturists (Well ... let's call them - part-time nudists - if they makes sense.) - willing and eager to get down to nothing but the all-together at the drop of a backpack. Grin and bare it must be their unspoken motto! They almost never miss a chance to get bare-assed naked in the Great Outdoors. Yet, they share their passion for exploring the almost sacred natural beauty of these earthly vistas and talk about it from a very wholesome and pragmatic and..essentially a very modern, enlighted sort of way. There is none of that preachy or fiery rhetoric we often hear from fist-raising, whaler-boat ramming eco-activists. It's just cool, relaxed and sane -- and then the clothes come off - almost a moment of transcendental meditation when Dusty or Gareth sheds the burdens and textiles of normal hectic life and gets into his birthday alone (or sometimes together) peeing down at his own naked reflection in a tranquil hidden pond.

Yes, beside being Earth's Lower Angels, Garet and Dusty are nice on the eyes. Boy o' Boy(s) - how scenic does it get -- because they have some nice bubble butts to bare (excuse my lechery & leering grin!), and smooth tight bods and blond hair galore. That's just the old gizer in me speaking his passions -- so forgive that outburst.

What they do for our edification and entertainment is truly something all of would like to do: get naked in the sunshine. But rarely can most people actually put that wish into practice - except of a few hardy nudists and outdoor naturists (sort of like me too). That's an affinity we definitely share, and with a whole lot of people (gay straight, male / female - around the world) share too.

There's not doubt their fame and fans will spread -- creating a kind of treehugger nudist grassroots in hiking boots movement, the likes of which we can only see in events such as World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR).

That is certainly the reason I accidentally discovered them, stumbling upon their blog and videos online in the first place. I have frequently searched the Web for these and similar interests. Just as so might you have been doing in finding this blog post or Facebook Fan page. But search no longer, my friends and naked outdoor recreationalists, the Scenic Boys are on the trail again for Spring - Summer 2009. The Boys are back -- and in all their glory -- so I cannot wait for what's in store this season. (as written back in April 2009, and revised now at the end of Sept 2009.)

Incidentally, their nakedness is never blatant or simply for its own effect. This is NOT the 'cock-in-your-face' gratuitous poofery that the new Internet Web 2.0 so often shoves in our faces. Although guilty of sometimes doing that too am I , and also certainly a die-hard fan of watching nude and aroused guys, (check my other blogs to find out how much). I really really love what the Scenic Boys stand for, and who they are as real people, Garet and Dusty represent a kind of new breed (or species) of the Gay American Male (couple) - perhaps such great nature-loving gay men have existed for eons ( Walt Whitman comes to mind, et al, and likely for longer in Canada and Europe).

Let me be sure to point out that their online nudity is clandestine, totally natural, supremely classic (classy and artistic), and occurs seemingly spontaneously in the most appropriate and unobtrusive contexts that you almost don't even notice one or more of them are naked! It's these CMNM pastoral images that struck my heart and snatched up my visual attention.

The excursions are immersed among some truly glorious natural landscapes which balance - even overshadow the masculine physical beauty of their bare subjects - mostly each other, but occasionally a naked friend or two, who is accompanying them. The nudity isn't even highlighted in either their blogs or videos - so they make it a non-issue. The two scenic lover boys habitually go to places where the spatial perspective, remote or interesting geography, varied terrain, splendid timing, and often gorgeous weather invite all human visitors, who would be blessed to pass among such pristine natural splendor, who could not resist the unbridled desire to remove all clothing and be exposed to the audacious beauty of Mother Earth and Father Sky. It is going natural (au naturel) in the ultimate sense of the word: naturist, naturalist, and Earth-protecting, and respecting eco-nudist, seen in his finest form and his own element.

It helps (terrifically - LOL) that the Scenic Boys are both rather nice looking or 'scenic' themselves. No slouchy couch potatoes with too much Seattle Java under their belts here, and Ugly Fuzzy and Dust_monkee - in their alternate persona on Flickr - are very easy on the old eye-balls, not to put too crass of a spin on admiring their earthly delights and heavenly treasured trails and tails.

Dusty and Garet (known to me as Gareath -(as if from an ancient Gaelic myth), leaving modesty or the lack of it aside for a moment, don't mind sharing their love for each other, and the simple joys of friendship and life's little pleasures, or their equally brilliant admiration for the bountiful riches that Mother Nature offers to all who will partake of it through hiking, camping, boating trips not very far from home. They lead us on short weekend visit - how to just enjoy living and breathing deeply outdoors - in mainly the North West of the US.

Don't get me wrong or get me righteous.... these are not porn stars or blatant exhibitionists... not that I have anything against those two categories of men either. But they are just two very sweet, emotionally mature (although they might not admit it), really-down-to-earth, thoughtful and sexy guy-next-door dudes that you can't help but fall in love with (OK.. I admit it). I am smitten - it's true. But I will love getting over that because I know they have a greater love that supercedes any other desire or attraction: The Love of Mother Earth.

What more could modern, queer or straight, Republican or Democrat America ask for? These are the true American idols -- emblem boys for a Post-Modern Greening of American Consciousness, and shining very human examples for today's Obama-generation which includes 8 - 88 year-olds, crossing all former social lines of separation: age, race, gender, sexuality, and politics.) They don't comment much on religion - so I won't either.

If you haven't met them or 'scene' the down-home, earthy, yet well-made, videos posted on the Scenic Boys blog, then you don't know what you've been missing. Take a gander and you'll be back regularly for more outdoor adventures with the two handsome trekkers and the consort of friends in local and faraway places.

Their photographic and videographic work is very nice done. You can get a close-up view at their Scenic Boys blog. More importantly, it depicts their wonderful pastoral romps through America's and (a few) other nation's natural vistas , bathing in warm hot spring pools or relaxing at a pitched tent camping spot in the rugged terrains on their many weekend and vacation journeys around state and national parks. Remarkably they often do in te bare naked 'state' as well in which they arrived the our beloved Earth.

I cannot wait for them to visit Hawaii. Hopefully it will be at a time when a few of their fans (and friends) can join them. I'm going to suggest some ideas for a Big Island Naked Hiking Adventure, which will originate from Kalani Honau Oceanside Resort, a gay-friendly retreat spot on the shores of the Puna Coast. For further info, visit Kalani.com on the web.

Garet and Dusty are the Scenic Boys; they show us all - the good, the great, the naked male and the woodland creatures ( flora and fauna, too - animals with fur or feathered birds among the clothed and unclothed humans frolicking in mountain springs or strolling grassy knolls). They do so with a grace and flair that perhaps only a couple of strongly purposed, good-natured gay men who love each other almost as much they do our sacred but scarred and endangered Mother Planet, Earth.

Naturist Action Committee NAC Update: San Onofre, California

This was forwarded to me by another group. With the moderators kind permission, I'd like to bring this to the groups attention, esp our brothers in California.

DATE    : October 22, 2009
SUBJECT : San Onofre Update
TO      : All naturists and other concerned citizens

Dear Naturist,

This is an update from the Naturist Action Committee (NAC) on the status
of San Onofre State Beach and NAC's ongoing effort on behalf of
naturists there.

In June of this year, a California state court of appeal ruled in favor
of the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in its
appeal of a Superior Court's ruling from 2008 that had favored
naturists. The Naturist Action Committee and Friends of San Onofre Beach
subsequently sought a ruling from the California Supreme Court. Today,
the California Supreme Court declined to hear the case.

The appellate ruling was initially unpublished, but at the request of
DPR, the appellate court later published the ruling. NAC requested
that the ruling be de-published. However, as an adjunct to today's
announcement, the California Supreme Court refused NAC's request to
de-publish.

At issue in the lawsuit was whether DPR has followed proper procedure in
abruptly ending the application of the Cahill/Harrison regulation
at San Onofre State Beach. Cahill/Harrison is long-standing and
well-known means for managing and regulating the clothing-optional use of
portions of state parks.

TICKETS FOR NUDITY ARE POSSIBLE AT ALL CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS

The Supreme Court's refusal to hear the case allows the possibility that
rangers may immediately begin issuing citations for nudity under
Title 14, Section 4322 of the California Code of Regulations. Because
the appeal ruling was published, this threat applies not only at San
Onofre State Beach, but at ALL UNITS OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE PARK SYSTEM.

MORE INFORMATION

Details of this situation and specifics of the Cahill/Harrison
Regulation and associated documents may be found on the NAC Web page:
http://www.naturistaction.org/sanonofre

There, you will find background documents related to the Cahill Policy,
the Harrison letter and NAC's lawsuit.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

This is a tremendous setback, but the battle has not ended. The Naturist
Action Committee is carefully considering the details of each of
its remaining options and the ramifications of each.

NAC will continue to issue Action Alerts, Advisories and Updates on this
issue as circumstances require. Look for them.

PLEASE HELP NAC TO CONTINUE HELPING NATURISTS!

The Naturist Action Committee remains committed to the vigorous defense
of the clothing-optional use of public land. Activism on behalf of
naturists can be expensive. NAC relies entirely on the voluntary
financial support of people like YOU.

Hot Spots to visit in Hawaii (Oahu and Big Island)

Recently, someone asked me to list the best things I enjoy doing (or taking visitors to do/see) in Hawaii. Since I basically stay on the Big Island or visit Oahu, I wrote down just in a few minutes a long list. (Photos may be added when I have the time).

These are many fun things I recommend for single men and women, gay couples, straights:

On Oahu

This is the same island that Honolulu (Waikiki Beach) is found.)

0) nude swim on Waikiki Beach after midnight
1) climb up to the peak of Diamond Head Crater (closes at 5pm)
2) visit the unofficial nude beach at Diamond Head Beach (below the Lighthouse) - discretion advised
3) take the gay catamaran cruise (Sunday clothing optional) and Saturday gay but textile.
4) Maui Taco (fast food but delicious) - along with Kona Longboard draft beer (local brew) on 2nd floor of Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.
or have mai-tai cocktails at the bar where the drink was invented
5) see street performances 9pm - midnight on main street (Kalakaua) in Waikiki
6) Spend time with local gay crowd on Queen's Surf (Waikiki Beach) not far from the Honolulu Aquarium
or play volleyball (Wed afternoons) with gay group across Hula's Bar (Waikiki Grand Hotel - on Kapahulu just near the Zoo).

Hawaii, Big Island
The sightseeing/activity/tourist spot are listed as if you were driving from Kailua-Kona (west side) north and around the island to Honoka'a, Hilo, Puna District,

0) snorkel (or diving) with giant manta rays (Kona-Kailua)
1)Gay (unofficial nude 'cruising' beach at Honokahau Marina, near Honokohau National Park (Preserve) 5 miles south of airport (3 miles north of Kona (also called Kailua-Kona)
2) Nude/gay Beach 67 (telephone #) on Puako-Hapuna Rd (35 miles north of N of Kailua-Kona)
3) Camp at Spencer Beach - tent spots just to a quiet beach (unless strong winds)
4) Sushi Rock (sushi restaurant at Hawi - 50 miles north of Kailua-Kona), quaint town, live music with good local sushi on Friday night (reservation recommended)
5) spend the afternoon before in Kapa'a - (north of Hawi to visit galleries and local art works stores)
6) Waimea (western-type 'cowboy' town)
7) Waipio Canyon (a few miles from Honoka'a) great (and strenuous hike - up and down) to a wondeful coastal valley
8) Drive up Mauna Kea for great views of the Hamakua Coast (take road from Paauillo up toward Pohakea - 15-20 minutes and back)
9) Laupahoehoe Valley (giant tsunami washed away the village on the lower 'viewpoint' - commerative monuments and great rocky ocean shore with green parks)

9+1 (alternate drive from Kona to Hilo goes across the Saddle Back (the high elevation area between Mauna Kea and the slope leading to Mauna Loa - it's perfect at sunset)

10) Hilo - "Old Town"
11) Volcanoes National Park (is nice) but try to see the 'real' lava flows and huge steam cloud at Kalapana
12) Keheha Black Sands Beach (at milemaker #19 on Kalapana-Kopoho Beach Rd (between Hwy 130 and Hwy 132) -- Family and hippie style clothing optional beach (plenty of gay too)
Early morning - you can swim with dolphins and see whales in season (Dec-Feb (sometimes later).
13 - 2) Steam vents (natural steam sauna in caverns created by rising mineral steam) about 5 miles from Pahoa on Hwy 130
13 - 2 You'll need to stop for food (or supplies) - Be sure to check the quaint little town of Pahao - a few nice restaurant
13 - 3 Kalani Oceanside Resort - a wonderful resort and de facto community center - very gay friendly (http://www.kalani.com ) - great organic buffet meals and gift shop, regular classes (hula, yoga - sometimes 'naked yoga', and also therapeutic and holistic massage of various type. Accommodation from camp sites to nice rooms to elegant vacation villas. Walking distance from Kehena Beach (see #12 above)
14) Kapoho warm ocean ponds (tidal pools)
15) Naalehu (drive around southern point of Big Island)

There are actually too many place to mention.

Enjoy and aloha....

Onsen: come on in, boys, the water's fine (Pics 15-18)

Guys with a narrow towel draped discreetly in front, and their butts shining and warm from their own heat - due to the 40 degree or hotter water (Celius - of course) are common sights at hot spring baths and the open-air mineral pools in Japan, which are known as 'onsen' 温泉. Of course, there are several other countries where

In the top photo, the guys are obviously not Japanese. I wonder if they were visitors to an onsen (hot minerals spring bath and/or resort) in Japan or if that's in another place. Obviously, there are places similar to 'onsen' in Scandinavia, particularly Finland, nearby Russian, but also in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, even England (The city of Bath being such an example - at least long ago).

It has not really developed into an industry or common social practice of almost ritualistic cleansing and relaxtion therapy that other cultures have adopted it.

Excuse me for cross-posting to Kelly's Second Life, Travel with Sunbuns, and Otoko (my blogs).

On the trail - naked but not alone.

It's fun to see photos like these - guys who have gathered for an outdoor event in the all-together - naked as a jay bird. One of the Young Men's Nudist Association, or YMNA, Y! group's members wrote this comment about the photos: "Those pictures are from Dream Canyon outside of Boulder, Colorado. A few of those folks are acquaintances by way of a local group I (Ed) belong to."

Where else (North America or other locations - like Dream Canyon) do you know where guys can freely take long nude hikes like this or do other recreational or sporting activities in the nude?

Please add such places to our online database (click link below):

Fill out the Naked Places form on Wufoo to add to our CMNM database.

Nude on Spanish beaches

In response to the recent messages on this topic, I'd given the example of the main beach at Benidorm as a place where it would not be a  good idea to test the legal position on nudity on Spanish  beaches (see 1st pic). However I've just come across photos  of two much smaller beaches close by, where nudism seems to be the norm and where additionally a much more peaceful day  in the sun and sea seems guaranteed.

Barcelona beach 1&2

It's been a wish for quite some time to visit the nude and gay beaches around Barcelona, and, of course, Sitges.
I was really hoping to do that this summer (actually early September), but while I am going to Spain on business at that time, I can't spend any time in Barcelona.   So .. it's kind of ironic that these 'happy' reminders of what I'm missing come along.

Crete nude beaches (4): Frangokastello

[Atitlan wrote: I have ]Mixed feelings about this beach. Frangokastello is named after the 13th century Venetian castle (pic 2) on a narrow strip of plain under mountains on the south coast of Crete, some 12km east of the tiny provincial capital of Hora Sfakion. If you're staying in Frangokastello, like we were, you can probably walk to the beach 1km east of the castle.

The sandy beach shelves only gently into the warm water, perfect for weak or non-swimmers. The bay is also better protected than the main beach from
the summer winds. However the authorities have tried to ensure nudism only occurs at the far end of the beach. This part has little width of beach, even less so when the tide is in, so it can get cramped and crowded. On our first visits there was a preponderance of what I'd call hearty naturists - groups of straight nudists standing talking to each other. But it did improve on later visits, with a mix of families, couples and singles. As there's no shade, other than from bring-your-own cheap umbrellas available in the mini-markets, we found it best to
arrive at 4pm and stay almost until the sun went down at 8pm. It was quieter then too. Towards the evening, when most people had disappeared, we noticed a few single males gathering, presumably for some fun at dusk. Not, though, a reason on its own to make it a beach of choice for ymna members.

Crete nude beaches: (3) Gialiskari, near Paleochora

The only town in south-west Crete - and a small one at that - is Paleochora. Apparently there is a nudist section at the far end of the town's Sandy Beach but we never went there. Instead we followed the other hire cars very slowly down the rocky track to the beaches 4km to the east. We got a flat tyre on one trip but, no sooner had we got out to fix it, than 3 almost-naked Greek lads stopped and changed the tyre for us, refusing to accept any payment.

Follow the road at the end of Pebble Beach and take a branch off to the right after 1km. When you arrive at the three Anidri beaches, take the left fork marked Gialiskari Beach and park behind the friendly kantina that serves snack meals and cold drinks under the welcome shade of trees.

The nudist section of the beach is the furthest away from the car park, marked by a gap between the two sets of sunbeds. During the week, nudists
were about 60% of those on the beach; at the weekend it was reversed. Mostly nudist couples including two other male couples. You could continue walking naked along the E4 walking trail to the east and it seems likely there is
occasional cruising along there. However this particular beach is probably not a sensible destination for those of you hoping to meet new friends. A lovely place, with cliffs behind, comfortable coarse sand to lie on and clear blue water to swim in.

--------------------------------------------------
I promised I would post some photos of nude beaches visited in Crete this month. If you're just looking for pictures of nude men on the beaches, stop now.
However if you're thinking of visiting Crete or you're interested in finding out about how nude beaches operate in parts of Europe, read on.

The first thing to stress is that nude beaches in Greece vary by time of week and time of year. Some may be taken over by 'textiles' at weekends and during the July/Aug peak season. Crete is so far south that you can visit the beach most days from April to October, so missing the summer peak may not be a problem.

The other point is that few European beaches are entirely nude. Nudists tend to co-exist with textiles on the same beach, either together or at different sides of the beach. The nude part of the beach is always the furthest away.

There is an excellent website with hundreds of pages on Greek nude beaches. Essential reading before you go, even if some of the information now seems out of date:

Crete nude beaches: (1) Elofonisi

So, to the first beach. It is the furthest west on the large island of Crete. Its beauty comes partly from masses of tiny rose-pink shells comprising the sand - and this has meant visitors by the busload. However if you wade across to the island (off-right in picture 1) and walk along the eastern or left side, you will soon come to your first nudists spread around the little bays - see 2nd pic. We saw several single males making for the rocks at the end. A word of warning - it's a national park where sun umbrellas are banned and there is no shade. You could get very sunburnt out in the open.

Crete nude beaches (2): Kethrodassos

Article and photo Forwarded From: atitlan on his [ymna2] yahoo groups

This is my kind of nude beach - very beautiful, very quiet, shade sitting on dunes under the juniper trees. Not a place to go to if you're seeking company but certainly somewhere to commune naked with nature. There were about ten of us there the afternoon we visited, mostly young couples, either naked from the start or eventually naked. Apparently it does get people camping there at weekends but they do not disturb the nudists, I understand.

The downside is getting there. It is only about 3km east of Elafonisi/Elafonissos but to get there by road you need a 4WD or nerves of steel. Take the road just north of the village, signposted Paleochora. The surface loses its asphalt almost immediately. Follow it as best you can past various turnings until you reach a greenhouse on a bend and a right-hand narrow track with grass down the middle. Follow this uneven and winding track for another 500m or so until you reach a parking spot on the headland. Then descend on foot to the beach below.

A better alternative might be to drive to the beach at Elafonissos and park the furthest to the left you can. Then follow on foot the marked E4 walking trail along the coast (unusually flat here) until, maybe after half an hour, you arrive at the Kethrodassos beach.

Summer in Berlin

Here's an article from the July 2009 UK edition of Conde Nast Traveller, forwarded in a message from atitlan on his Yahoo Group: [ymna2]

It's a shame they didn't  illustrate it more appropriately with a picture of nude bathers but it does give a good impression of what Berlin is like in the summer. There are plenty of places to be naked outdoors, a fascinating cultural scene
to explore and some great nightlife. Almost everyone speaks good English too. I heartily recommend it as  a place to visit in the next month or so.

The main article is included in the attached photo [click to enlarge].

In Thin Air of the Alps, Swiss Secrecy Is Vanishing

Found in the March 18, 2009, New York Times.

New York Times

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/03/17/world/17swiss_600.jpg

A growing number of unclad hikers are wandering the Alps, near Appenzell. Some Swiss legal experts say that banning nudity in public would be unconstitutional.

APPENZELL, Switzerland — The Swiss like their secrecy, particularly in banking. At other times, they are more open. Take hiking.

In recent years, it has become fashionable for a growing number of Swiss and some foreigners to wander in the Alps clad in little more than hiking shoes and sun screen. Last summer, the number of nude hikers increased to such an extent that the hills often seemed alive with the sound of everything but the swish of trousers.

In September, the police in this mountainous town detained a young hiker, whose friends will identify him only as Peter, wandering with nothing on but hiking boots and a knapsack. But they had to release him, because in Switzerland there is no law against hiking in the nude. The experience alarmed the city fathers of Appenzell, pop. 5,600, who worried that the town might become a Mecca for the unclad. Like most remote mountain regions, this is a conservative area.

For centuries the farmers here lived off their famed Appenzeller cheese and a bitter liqueur that most, except fervent admirers, say tastes like cough medicine gone bad. Not until 1990 did Appenzell grant women the right to vote, decades after other regions of Switzerland.

Suppose families with children were out hiking and encountered a group of nude hikers, officials asked. Moreover, the name of Appenzell was popping up with troublesome frequency in the blogs and chat rooms of nude hiking enthusiasts.

"We're not in Canada, where you can hike for hours in vast forests," said Markus Dörig, 49, spokesman for the local government, a look of exasperation on his face. "Here you meet other hikers every few minutes. It was bothersome."

Konrad Hepenstrick says he almost never meets people who are bothered. "You greet them, and they greet you, though in winter, of course, many ask, 'Aren't you cold?'" he said, picking at a lunch of coarse, spicy Appenzeller sausage in a restaurant high on the slopes over the town. Unseasonable snow showers clouded the view of the surrounding peaks, thwarting plans for a nude hike with this reporter.

Mr. Hepenstrick, 54, is an architect who loves to hike in the altogether. In winter, he said, he has hiked for hours in temperatures well below freezing, though he does concede the need for a hat and gloves. He has hiked in the nude for about 30 years, he said, and has crisscrossed the hills and mountains around Appenzell, as well as in France, Germany, Italy and even the Appalachians.

His companion, a schoolteacher, also hikes, though she will not do so au naturel, he said. So why does he take off his clothes? "There's not much to discuss," he said. "It's freedom. First, freedom in your head; then, freedom of the body."

With some Swiss legal experts arguing that banning nudity in public would be unconstitutional, the government has been hamstrung in responding to the hikers. It has drafted legislation that, if enacted, would outlaw "abusive behavior that offends against custom and decency," but it seems likely to be challenged. Daniel Kettiger, a legal expert, published a six-page paper last month titled, predictably enough, "The Bare Facts: On the Criminal Prosecution of Nude Hiking," pointing out that in 1991 Switzerland struck a law from its books that banned nudity in public.

"Simply being naked without any sexual connotation is no longer illegal," Mr. Kettiger said by telephone, adding, "at the time there was a wave of nudism." Was he himself a hiker? "Yes, but never nude," he replied. "First there is the danger of sunburn, and then there are ticks all over the place in the Alps, which carry Boreliosa," or Lyme disease.

The Appenzeller justice minister, Melchior Looser, is sure he can frame a law that will force the naked to cover up. "I think the measure will work the way we have fashioned it," said Mr. Looser, 63, noting that offenders would be fined the equivalent of $170.

He would like to have the law in place by springtime, when hikers again take to the hills. But he concedes that it must be approved by the grand assembly of the people, a gathering of all citizens of voting age once a year on the town's main square, which is scheduled to convene April 26. Passage is by no means assured.

Hans Eggimann believes it will be enacted. "I hike around the house naked, but outside I put my pants on," said Mr. Eggimann, 57, a large man who sells more than 60 types of cheese in his shop in the town center.

Others are not so sure. "Many Appenzellers I know say it doesn't bother them," said Alessandra Maselli, who works in a dry goods store not far from Mr. Eggimann's cheese emporium. "I'd say it's about half and half, with a slight majority for the law," she said.

Over in the Bücherladen bookstore, Caroline Habazin, 46, said the controversy gave everyone a good laugh at the town Carnival parade last month. One float featured a male and a female hiker in flesh-colored tights, their arm and leg muscles and their rear ends stuffed up steroid-style with filling, though the man's private parts were mostly covered by fake grape leaves. "I think it's only a pretty small group," she said.

Her colleague, Edith Sklorz, 48, said why anyone would want to hike nude was puzzling to her, though her husband felt differently. "I can understand swimming nude," she said, "but not hiking."

What offended her equally though, was the government's choice of responding to the hikers with a law. Recently, the neighboring town of Gossau passed a measure banning spitting in public, she said, threatening offenders with a $50 fine; and now a law to ban nude hikers. "For every tiny thing, there's a law," she said.

Ursula Heller has been selling apparel for hikers and trekkers for five years in her shop just off the town's main square. A threat to her business from nude hikers? She laughed deeply. She and her husband are avid hikers, she said, but she is against nudity.

"If you want to get undressed," she said, "you can always wear shorts or a bikini."

Barcelona and Sitges, Spain's Gay East Coast

Hi guys,
I'm planning a trip in August for Barcelona and I've heard quite a bit about Sitges. This is my first trip to Spain, so i'm looking for any input in regards to accommodations in Barcelona and if it's worth visiting Sitges.

1) Mostly it's going to be myself in the city (unless i can get a few friends come with me) but i've been looking into hotels vs apartments/lofts. Any thoughts on which is more accommodating in terms of price and convenience?

2) Also I'm not a big clubber but I've heard quite a bit about the night life in Barcelona, so any input on club/bars is quite welcome. And also any experience anyone has had in Sitges as well.

Thanks for all the help guys,
Ravi.

I've been to Sitges several times and can definately recommned it, its a small very gay town with many bars all within easy walking distance of each other. There are also many gay and gay friendly restaurants, so if you are travelling on your own there is absolutley no need to be concerned. The town has two main gay beaches, one nude and one not, the naked one is about 10 minute walk from the town centre the covered beach is right bang on the town centre. The train from Barcelona to Sitges is very quick and cheap it takes about 40 mts.

As far as accomodation is concerned - thats a personal choice that depends on your budget and style, but I'm sure both Barcelona and Sitges hove something to offer.

BTW - Majorca is also worth a visit, there is a small lively gay scene in Palma, which is a beautiful town with a great all round culture and feeling. The island is stunning - but best stay away from certain mainstream resorts on south west coast.

Enjoy.

I hope to go in September, my last visit was 12 years ago so I am sure some things have changed. It is a really friendly resort, perhaps a little more expensive than other places like Benidorm but worth a visit.

Palma de Majorca is good too but the scene has contracted quite a lot, the bars seem less and less, oh for the days of "The Black Cat"

I lived in Barcelona for four months. I would say the best clubs are DBoy and the Arena clubs (esp VIP, on La Gran Vía). Metro is good if you're for an obvious, guaranteed hookup.

I never went to Sitges, but would recommend it, as it is extremely gay (most gay guys in BCN make it there at some point), and it is a spectacularly gorgeous town. There is also a gay beach (which doubles as the city's nude beach) in Barcelona... it is called Playa Mar Bella, and it is pretty much an entire nightclub's worth of hot guys on one beach.

As for accommodations, anything would do, I suppose, but I can specifically recommend Hostal L'Antic Espai (www.anticespai.com). It is in a great location in the heart of the city (L'Eixample near Plaza Catalunya), owned by a really agreeable gay couple, competitive prices, and just an all-around great unique little boutique hotel.

Have a good trip!

hi there,

I loved Sitges and took spanish classes with the Hola Sitges Language school which provides great appartments for rent right on the beach...but of course you are going the very high season and very expensive season. Prices nearly triple as compared to prices in May or October, when the weather is still very good. Barcelona is fabulous for architecture and music: do not miss a concert at the Palau de Musica Catalana.. The Catalans (because they are bilingual there: Catalan and Spanish) are very friendly, and gay friendly in particular. In Sitges there are 3 gay beaches: the fully dressed one right in the middle of town, the clothing optional one at little bit out of the main action (north ) and the nude gay beaches at the south of Sitges: you have to walk a bit out of town following the train tracks... Sitges has the reputation of being the most expensive of Spain...so plan ahead....

I have plans to be in BCN in July, and was thinking of spending some time in Sitges. Anyone have a suggestion for a specific hotel or B&B in Sitges? I prefer clean, neat, well run, not too fancy, smaller, but most important is QUIET since I am a light sleeper - so nothing next door to a club or bar. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys,

There's this nice website with a lot of gay-related info about Barcelona (maybe a bit outdated, but still 90% correct): http://www.gayinspain.com/gay/barcelona? lang=en

If you need more details or recommendations about specific places, I'll try to help you.

Enjoy BCN!

Thanks I will check out that site - here is a question about Sitges. It seems like there are several different beaches and several different parts of town. Is there a specific area where I should try to stay? I dont mind walking (in Provincetown, I typically stay at a hotel that is a 45 minute walk to the beach - but its a fantastic hotel so I dont mind at all).

You guys will love Sitges... It is soooooo beautiful, and the gay scene there is incredible... Not much of a sex bar scene, if that is what you are looking for (For that, mixed with resort, I highly recommend Playa Inglesa in Canary Islands). But Sitges is a picturesque beach town with a lot of designer shops and great restaurants. The bars range from discos to quiet venues. To stay, I would definitely suggest the gay-owned Hotel Liberty, across the train station and near the main entrance plaza where the bus from BCN and El Prat airport leaves you. It runs about €55 to €60 per night for high season.. summer... with breakfast included. The owners are really fun and in the early evenings, the hotel bar becomes a prime stopping point before heading out. The only gripe I have is the beach... It is very crowded and the water isn't as pleasant (very murky) as it would be in other spots on the Mediterranean. There are a lot of gay Britons living in Sitges, so language won't be a problem. Have fun!

lord. THANKS for that heads up about the Romantic. I just found them through Pink Pages and sent them an email asking for more info - their site is rather vague on details. I am a light sleeper, so a club next door is a definite NO NO for me.
On the typical hotel.com type sites I only find hotels right on the beach, which would also seem to be very noisy.
Hotel Liberty sounds good - any other suggestions from anyone else who has been to Sitges?
Thanks again for all the help guys! This entire trip is turning into an internet based adventure!

i'm going to sitges and barcelona july 2nd, about my 6th time. Sitges has a great weeknd gay scene, most of the bigger bars have gorgeous strippers, XXL has darkrooms and is very blokey, Prinz club is small but strippers and hot shower night (its a shower on stage for anyone to strip and shower in!), I got stripped naked by a hunky stripper. Piano Bar is music based quite tasteful, parrots is where everyone starts for a drink to watch passers by. Sitges gets much much less busy from mid september to april, but if you can catch the festiovals and the fabulous firweorks shows its a real treat. August is best (and the most expensive).

Barcelona has some nice bars like Dietrichs, lots fo saunas full of hot Spanish men, but avoid the one neaerst Place Despanya unless you want to spend all your time saying no thanks (or yes please!) to Rent Boys - dozens of fit ones, but 30 minutes was all i could take before it got annoying and left!

Barcelona is a fabulous city even without a gay scene, but the gay nude beach is also full of eye candy. The nude beach in sitges is quite a hike over coastal cliffs, is very small, and is next to a busy mainline rail line - gay men love taking the risk of getting killed to go cruising in the woodland across the line rather than walk over a bridge on top of a hill. The trains are VERY fast and come storming out of a tunnel, so dont do it!
