Travel to Japan - Recommendations for Second Trip

Places between Tokyo and Nagasaki -- well, let's see.

If you have not already seen Nikko (about 2 hours from Tokyo sort northwest) you definitely should go there. I suspect you've already been but it IS worth a second or third trip if the season is different; spring flowers, fall leaves, winter xcountry skiing round out the Toshogu shrine - whose beauty is unsurpassed in its magnificence.

Further south is nearer to Mt. Fuji is Hakone. - a hot spring resort area around a mountain lake.

I think the Kanazawa area and Noto Peninsula is worth a visit on the Japan Sea coast but it's harder to get around there without a car - although trains should be sufficient. The northern island of Hokkaido would be a great place to visit during June (when most of the rest of the country is bathed in the pre-summer rainy season). It's a place for nature lovers with wider open spaces and natural hot springs, cycling and hiking. Sometimes there are travel deals or air or rail passes for tourists that make it attractive to go up north.
Nara is the another ancient capital of the country so you may have seen or might have bypassed it for Kyoto. Himeji Castle is worth a visit (near Kobe).

Hiroshima and the Peace Memorial as well as nearby Miyajima (Itsuku-shima Shrine) -another World Heritage site like Himeji Castle, is considered to one of the three most beautiful places in Japan (by its citizens). On the way toward Kyushu is the historic Okayama prefecture village of Kurashiki and nearby you can see the many islands of the Seto Sea (eastern shore along the Pacific).

I enjoyed visiting Beppu and Kumamoto and the environs of Mt. Aso on the island of Kyushu - the volcanic hot springs and mud and sand baths were great.

My next trip will be to visit Shikoku Island - which has both cultural and historical sites as well as stunning natural mountain and seaside landscapes.
